In honour of Water Saving Week 2026 and its focus on protecting wildlife, we are highlighting how responsible water management and the protection of water resources help safeguard our local ecosystems. Envirogen has made a significant contribution to environmental sustainability with its innovative industrial water treatment solutions. In collaboration with Align JV for the HS2 project, this initiative highlights Envirogen’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges within large-scale infrastructure developments.
Addressing the essential task of remediating contaminated process water from drilling activities and site runoff at HS2, Envirogen developed an innovative, bespoke modular water treatment plant. By effectively managing runoff, the system prevents harmful pollutants from entering fragile ecosystems. This solution, encompassing pre-filtration, high-efficiency ultrafiltration membranes (UF), reverse osmosis (RO), and advanced oxidative treatment technologies, supported HS2’s stringent environmental requirements.
Envirogen’s approach, using a series of containerised, semi-permanent multi-module ‘plug and play’ systems, exemplifies rapid deployment while ensuring water is returned to local water courses at exceptional quality levels. This custom solution, meeting HS2’s stringent requirements, allowed for the project’s wastewater remediation with impressive efficiency, moving from contract signing to treating 250 cubic metres per hour (m3/hr) of water within just six months, showcasing Envirogen’s unparalleled efficiency and adaptability.
A pivotal aspect of Envirogen’s service is its focus on sustainability and efficiency, embodying best practices in corporate social responsibility (CSR), stewardship and innovation. The capability for remote monitoring of on-site equipment underscores a commitment to service and aligns with contemporary demands for sustainability and technology. Through this project, Envirogen has showcased cost-effective problem-solving in the water treatment sector, making a significant contribution to the HS2 project’s environmental and ecosystem protection objectives.
The partnership with Align JV underscores Envirogen’s ability to closely collaborate on designing and executing complex solutions swiftly. This collaboration has been crucial in reducing the environmental footprint of one of the UK’s most impactful infrastructure projects, reinforcing Envirogen’s leadership in the market and commitment to sustainable development and habitat stewardship.
With over fifty years of industry experience, Envirogen excels in providing industrial water treatment solutions and process filtration, addressing water processing and filtration challenges across many sectors. This experience supports environmental and sustainability targets while enhancing productivity and reducing costs.
In summary, Envirogen’s innovative water treatment plant for the HS2 project showcases its commitment to environmental excellence, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility. As Water Saving Week reminds us, protecting and managing water responsibly is essential to safeguarding wildlife and local ecosystems. This project demonstrates how industrial innovation can play a meaningful role in that mission.
